FARM TO TABLE SWINE SHOW
ALL SWINE FOR THIS SHOW WILL BE PROVIDED FROM THE SAME LOCATION, THROUGH THE BOONE COUNTY FAIR BOARD.
The Farm to Table Swine Show is a terminal/carcass swine show. Swine will be shown in the ring during the Boone County Fair and have the opportunity to show at the Northwest Arkansas District Fair (but are not required). On a specified date following the Boone County and Northwest Arkansas District Fairs (Late September/Early October) the swine will go to a slaughter facility designated by the Boone County Fair Board to be graded on the rail for their carcass merit. Swine will be evaluated on three separate components of the contest. Each part will carry a percentage of overall points to be combined at the conclusion of the contest.Total participation of the contest is required to participate.
Requirements for Participation
Cost:
The barrows will be provided to each participant after providing a deposit of $75. The deposits will need to be collected by advisors prior to March 15th to ensure the timely order of the barrows. Each exhibitor will be allowed one barrow. There will be an affidavit for verification of eligibility. If an exhibitor goes to school in Boone County, but lives in a neighboring county, they will need to contact their 4-H/FFA Advisor and the Boone County Fair Board to discuss options for participation.
Distributing of Swine:
ALL SWINE FOR THIS SHOW WILL BE PROVIDED FROM THE SAME LOCATION, THROUGH THE BOONE COUNTY FAIR BOARD. All the barrows must be weighed on the day of distribution. Distribution will take place on a specified date in late May. All the swine must be fully vaccinated, RFID tagged, and weaned. In order to make this contest as fair as possible, all of the swine must be born on, or close to, March 25th, weaned on April 15th, and have an average weight of 55 to 60 pounds on the date of distribution.
At the time of distribution, exhibitors will draw a number which will decide the barrow they will take ownership of.
Blood Testing:
All swine must be blood tested within 60 days prior to the Boone County Fair. The dates for blood testing will be released in late June or early July.
Processing:
The exhibitor will be responsible for the processing fees associated with the slaughter and processing of the swine and taking ownership of the meat when the processing facility states it is ready for pickup. If the exhibitor would like to sell the swine before processing, so that they will not have to take ownership of the meat, they may do so. The exhibitor will be awarded the points for the carcass merit, and the new owner of the swine will be responsible for the fees associated with the slaughter and processing.
There will be three parts of the Farm to Table Swine Contest:
1. AVERAGE DAILY GAIN:
The weight of the swine on the date of distribution compared to Fall show check-in weight will be evaluated for points. Top five will be awarded.
2. RING SHOW:
Exhibitors will show against each other in the ring during The Boone County Fair. The judge will be looking for swine they purchase for slaughter. The swine will weigh-in at check-in. The barrows will be classed according to weight. Weight classes will be determined following Fall show weigh-in. No paints, adhesives, oils, or any other product/additive may be applied to the animal during the ring show. Washing with soap and water is permitted. Failure to follow these guidelines will disqualify the exhibitor from the Farm to Table Swine competition. Top five will be awarded.
3. RAIL CONTEST:
Exhibitors will be responsible for taking their animal to the designated slaughter facility on the specified date following the Boone County Fair and Northwest Arkansas District Fair. The swine will be slaughtered by the facility and judged for their carcass merit by a judge from the University of Arkansas Meat Science Department. The barrows will be graded and judged on the rail at the specified facility on the specified date. The exhibitor of the swine will be responsible for the processing fees associated with the slaughter and processing and taking ownership of the meat when the processing facility states it is ready for pickup. If the exhibitor would like to sell the animal before processing, so that they will not have to take ownership of the meat, they may do so. The exhibitor will be awarded the points for the carcass merit, and the new owner of the swine will be responsible for the fees associated with the slaughter and processing. Top five awarded.
POINTS
Top five placements of each section of the contest will be awarded money on a percentage basis. Top five of overall points (all three parts combined) will be paid on a percentage. Percentages are according to placement and points. If there is a tie in the overall points the winner will be the exhibitor that placed highest in the rail contest. Exhibitors MUST participate in all parts of the program to be eligible for points in any part of the program.
The value percentage of each portion of the swine show are as follows:
- Average Daily Gain: 20%
- Ring Show: 20%
- Rail Contest: 40%
